Greg Smallman (1947 - Current)

Australia

Greg Smallman is an Australian luthier who gained international recognition for his innovative approach to guitar making. His instruments, built on the most groundbreaking designs, have inspired many luthiers around the world, especially those looking to push the limits of traditional guitar craftsmanship.

Smallman’s guitars are known for their distinctive design features. The back of the guitar has a high arch with many curves, making it both thick and heavy, while the soundboard is always made from red cedar (western red cedar), which is very thin and light. This unique design, paired with his special bracing technique using a grid-like structure, creates a highly flexible and dynamic response, resulting in a powerful sound even with light, delicate playing.

The legendary guitarist John Williams helped popularize Smallman’s instruments, and since then, many other renowned musicians have chosen them. Today, Smallman guitars are widely considered among the most revolutionary and preferred instruments by top players worldwide.
