Masaki Sakurai (1944 - Current)
Japan

Masaki Sakurai began his journey as a guitar maker after graduating from university in 1967, under the mentorship of his teacher, Masaru Kono. Through the traditional Japanese apprenticeship system with Kono, he honed his skills and, in 1988, won first place at an international guitar competition in France, earning recognition as a master luthier.

After taking over his teacher's workshop, Sakurai continued the spirit of craftsmanship and dedicated himself to producing the finest instruments. Over his 52 years as a luthier, he has worked tirelessly with his apprentices to refine and advance his craft. Sakurai focused on studying the tonal differences (such as color, warmth, and depth) of the greatest guitars of the time, engaging in seemingly endless, simple, and repetitive auditory training to develop his own unique sound.

His guitars are known for their balanced sound, wide tonal range, and meticulous woodworking, with exquisite finishes and elegant design that showcase his mastery.
